About Us - History

AMD Engineering was established in 1994 by Alan Dike (BSC Mech Eng, UCT 1992).

Originally started with the primary objective of building indoor corporate go-karts (indoor karting), some 350 karts were designed, fabricated and supplied over the next two years, to most of the operators around the country. To grow the business further, it became necessary to establish a core speciality and the decision was made to move into the architectural steel and retail fixturing arena.

Over the next decade AMD Engineering built a solid reputation for quality shopfitting metalwork, supplying both shopfitting outfitters and retail groups directly. AMD has thereby developed and supplied ranges for multiple groups, including: The Foschini Group, Woolworths, Sportsmans Warehouse, Truworths/YDE, Queenspark, United Interiors, The Diamond Works, Spitz – to name but a few.

AMD Engineering has also been involved in diverse technical/artistic projects, including work for: Dylan Lewis Studios, The One and Only Hotel, RMS Shopfitters, Kubik, Silica Glass Studios – amongst others.

In keeping with international trends, AMD Engineering embarked on a strategy of global procurement solutions in 2004 – thereby offering our client base both instant locally-supplied solutions and also cost-effective mass-market options. AMD Engineering has since developed strong reciprocal relationships with a number of specialist manufacturers overseas – ensuring that our clients have multiple options and the best possible value. This has involved the import and export of goods – supplying international groups including Red Tag, BMB Beschlage and others.

Developing into a leading manufacturer of stainless steel and plated mild steel shopfitting rails and fixtures, AMD Engineering pioneered the move by local manufacturers to employ automated polishing equipment used in the preparation of uniform tube and flatbar finishes. This step also enabled AMD to successfully supply several outdoor/indoor steel and glass balustrading projects in the Cape Town City area.

Recognizing the need to provide turnkey solutions on projects with timber componentry, AMD Engineering took an active interest in BM Interiors (a local, international shopfitting group, est 1985), in 2005. AMD was therefore able to combine metal and glass capabilities with timber and acrylics – to provide a complete solution to clients with a variety of needs. The benefits of this investment have since exceeded all expectations, with both companies experiencing sharp and steady growth as a result.

In 2008, Michael Dike (ND Mech Eng, 2001) joined AMD as Operations Manager – bringing with him a background of Design, International Consulting Engineering & Project Management. This has expanded the management capacity and scope of AMD.

Thereafter, AMD Engineering has also acquired and developed its own local plating company – Glitterama Electroplating – allowing AMD to offer quality plating finishes from basic Electro-Galv to Bright Chrome, Satin Chrome, Satin Nickel and Black Chrome.

In light of the socio-economic conditions in South Africa over the past decade, AMD Engineering has achieved and maintained a Level 2 BEE Status for several years (current), with a BEE procurement Recognition Level of 125% To this end, AMD Engineering has appointed Simunye BEE Verification to asses and verify our compliance on an annual basis. As part of this ongoing process, AMD is involved in local enterprise development, assisting a few small local BEE enterprises both financially and with equipment supply.

In 2010, AMD Engineering assisted in developing two locally owned and staffed companies – to provide a broader range of specific skills. Together, these two companies provide more than 20 local job opportunities.

Speed Precision – run by Clint Rennard, Speed Precision offers high quality CNC engineering capabilities, including: CNC milling, CNC lathe work, capstan parting, drilling and general fitting & turning.

Polishing Solutions– run by Paul Hill, Polishing Solutions offers a comprehensive polishing service to the engineering / fabricating sector, including: semi/automated polishing of flatbar, square/rect tubing, round tubing sections – as well as hand finishing of completed units and structures.

AMD Engineering is a well-established manufacturing concern, with qualified engineers, an experienced workforce and well-equipped factory facilities – capable of small to large production runs. The majority of our repeat products are designed and custom-manufactured to suit the specific requirements of our clients.

AMD Engineering has extensive knowledge of Materials: (Mild Steel and Stainless Steel; Accessories, include Timber, Arcylics and Fixtures) and for Finishes: (Plated Bright Chrome, Satin Chrome, Satin Nickel, Black Chrome and Galvanised), (Painted Powdercoated and Sprayed) as well as excellent design resolution capabilities, ensuring that our products are not only innovative, but also fit for purpose, value engineered and aesthetically pleasing.

In December 2013, AMD Engineering invested in new premises in Maitland, Cape Town (6700m2 facility). With effect from January 2014, AMD Engineering is now operational in the new premises. This has provided a 25% instant capacity and capability increase, with a further 25% estimated by the end 2014, as additional facilities come on-line.

With effect from March 2014, AMD Engineering has taken over & re-structured the Polishing Solutions polishing team, to improve on volume capability and lead times. We are still able to offer external polishing services – now at a more competitive rate.

As of January 2015, AMD Engineering procured & installed a Trumpf 3050 CNC lasercutter – to bring ALL steel profiling in-house & expand on product range offering.

With effect from September 2015, AMD Engineering has installed a environmentally-friendly in-house plating facility, on-site in Maitland.

With an ever-expanding export portfolio and increased capacity, AMD Engineering is busy with multiple additional CNC solutions and upgrades. These steps are allowing AMD to empower existing staff with further training and to upscale the skill levels and abilities of in-house artisans.
